Assignment 1 - A Balancing Act

I have a very busy life and it can seem difficult at times. Lately I’ve had a few extra items on my plate and now I have added an on-line class to the menu. In order to be successful and excel in Eng111, I’ll need perseverance, good organization and time management skills. I have trouble with these important characteristics at times and need to stay consistent in order to accomplish my goal of completing this course with a good grade.

You must know that having five children takes a lot of energy and patience for any parent. My children bring home a backpack full of homework every week and each of their teachers has different requirements for the homework’s completion and due date. It takes a lot of work to make sure they have their homework done and turned in on time. Now I will add my own homework to the huge pile already on my desk. In order to avoid a huge pile up, we will complete our homework as soon as we can without waiting until the last minute. My goal is to not have things pile up. The kids and I will get it done and not wait until the day before it is due. This will help me stay on task with homework.

Distractions are easily come by in my life. My phone rings off the hook when I am at my busiest. I need to learn how to better ignore unimportant things and stay focused on the things that need to be completed. If it be a dirty bathroom, a sink full of dishes or an English assignment, I will prioritize my tasks and complete them before getting on the phone or into a deep conversation that would deter me from finishing whatever task I am facing. If there is a really good episode of prime time television on, I will record it and watch it at a later, less busy time. By eliminating distractions I will have an easier time doing housework, homework and giving my children the attention they need.

Good scheduling will be important for making my week work. I will use my planner and plan accordingly so that I don’t miss anything along the way. I need to make sure that I use my time wisely, again looking back at distractions to avoid. By using a schedule and staying on it, I will have a better chance for success overall in every task that I plan to accomplish.

It seems that this semester will be a balancing act indeed. I will use good time management skills and will try my best to be as organized as possible. I will be patient and stay relaxed at the same time, if that’s even possible. If I have a mental breakdown, please feel free to send me a hallmark card. ;) I do believe it’s possible for me to do well in Eng111 and all the other areas in my life at the same time and that’s why I enrolled into this class.

Introduction

My name is Amber Anderson. I am 29 years old and currently reside in the Northwest corner of Fairbanks, Alaska. I am married to a great guy and have five wonderful children. We have lived in Fairbanks since October 2006. Before coming to Fairbanks, my children and I lived in Rio Rancho, New Mexico and Gresham, Oregon. We were a traveling bunch in 2006, but are gladly staying in one place from now on.

I am very excited to start this English course. I enjoy writing but it can be scary and I sometimes wonder if I'm really that good at it. There are times when I love writing and times that I hate it. In the past I have written poetry, short stories, but mainly I like writing letters and my own little blogs for my eyes only. I can be a little shy when it comes to letting people read what I write, but I hope to overcome that this semester or at least in the near future.

I haven't had a lot of time for myself in the recent years. My kids have kept me very busy, but as they grow older they have gained their own independence which has enabled me to have some extra time. I love reading books that interest me and keep my eyes glued to the pages. I also love traveling, vacations, and spending time with my friends and family.

This past summer I found a new hobby in roller derby. In May 2008, some really awesome ladies started the Fairbanks Rollergirls (FBXRG). In June I joined the league and am so fortunate to be a part of such a great group of people. I used to roller skate when I was a young girl, but hadn't been on skates since then. It's a bit different to skate being almost 30. I now feel all the little aches and pains that I didn't as a youngster. I love it and will continue until my legs give out or something breaks. Up to this point I've had an interesting life and I hope to continue having new experiences and living life to the fullest. I am looking forward to new freedoms that I didn't have in the past and can't wait until I am finished with school and able to start a career of my own.
